Security lighting is also installed in commercial and public buildings to ensure safe evacuation in the event of an emergency. They provide directions as well as a way for people to move out in an organised manner. According to the Scottish law, it is essential that all commercial and high residency buildings have adequate emergency light systems.

There are two types of security lighting:

Maintained:
Its on at all times and can lead to more energy consumption. They are powered similarly to the normal room lighting system and are considered to be a part of it. However, when the power fails in emergency situation, they remain turned on for a duration of time. They are powered by a back-up battery system during the time of power fails. More suited for non-residential areas, the are usually found in cinemas, leisure centers, shopping centers, theaters and bars.

Non-Maintained
This kind of light comes on when the main power fails and the normal light system is cut off. It is suited for buildings that are usually lit (like offices). It gets its power from a back up battery that is charged from a constant connection to the main power system. In the case of an emergency, these lights stay on for at least three hours.
